Linguistics Major Acceptance Criteria
Entrance requirements: A minimum 2.0 overall GPA; 2.5 GPA in LIN 205 and 207.
The department offers three major tracks -- Applied Linguistics; Language, Society and Communication; and Language and Cognition. Two honors programs are also available. Thirty six (36) credit hours in Linguistics are required. Individual requirements are listed below.
Applied Linguistics (36 credit hours)
- Required Courses (24 credits) LIN 205, 207, 301, 302; 315 or 355 or 356; 405 or 421 or 493; and 496 teaching internship (6 cr. hrs.)
- Electives (12 cr): Four additional Linguistics Department courses; may include one course from another department with approved linguistic content.
Language and Cognition (36 credit hours) (available Fall 2001)
- Required courses (24 credits): LIN 205, 207, 301, 302; two of: LIN 320, 355, 417, 455; two of: LIN 356, 413, 438, 481.
- Electives (12 credits): Three additional Linguistics Department courses, and one course from another department with approved language and cognition content.
Language, Society, and Communication 36 credit hours)
- Required Courses (24 credits): LIN 205, 207, 301, 302, four additional Linguistics Department courses with sociolinguistic, communication or cultural content.
- Electives (12 cr) - Four additional Linguistics Department courses; may include one course from another department with approved linguistic content.
