His research interests include categorization theory, the cognitive typology of nominal classification systems; the expression of spatial concepts in language; and discours e analysis, especially narrative. A recent active interest is in the linguistic expression of subjectivity (`perspective') in narrative. He has published articles on the discourse function of grammatical coding, including perspective in Korean and Mandarin, case marking in German and Korean, word order in German and Mandarin, unbound reflexives in Korean and Mandarin, and topicalization and anaphora in Mandarin; on the cross-linguistic expression of extensional (spatial) concepts; on the typology of nomin al classification systems (Oxford Encyclopedia of Linguistics); and on aspects of the German gender system, with K-M Kopcke. Two major works in progress are on the typology of nominal classification systems, and on the linguistic structure of narrative d iscourse. He was director of the spatial analysis project of the Graduate Group in Cognitive Science and is currently a co-PI on the interdisciplinary (Cognitive Science) project on the structure and comprehension of narrative discourse.
